The Australian GP at Phillip Island truly delivered the goods this year! π With its iconic coastal views and a buzzing crowd, the on-track action was nothing short of spectacular. Marc Marquez (Gresini) claimed his third win of the season after an epic duel with Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing). Let’s dive into the standout moments from Round 17! π #MotoGP #PhillipIslandGP
"In Australia, the Insects are Massive" π - Marquez's Unbelievable Start
Only in MotoGP could you see a race start go sideways because of... a bug! π Marquez, lined up on the front row, found himself in trouble when his helmet tear-off, which he removed to clear a massive insect, got caught under his rear wheel. The result? Major wheel spin and a drop down the order at the first corner. You couldn’t make it up!
Marquez explained: “In Australia, the insects are massive! One landed right on my visor, so I had no choice but to pull off the tear-off. I thought the wind would carry it away, but it went straight under my rear wheel!” Even Pecco Bagnaia had to swerve to avoid the aftermath of the bizarre incident. π
Bagnaia wasn’t surprised: “As soon as I saw him take off the tear-off, I knew it would come back to haunt him. The wind was pushing it straight back.”
Only in Phillip Island, eh? π¬️
Jorge Martin's Close Call and the Championship Fight π₯
Jorge Martin left Phillip Island with a 20-point advantage in the title chase after winning the Tissot Sprint and taking a solid P2 in the main race. While he couldn’t quite beat Marquez on Sunday, Martin managed to stay in control of his championship destiny.
But it wasn’t without a scare! “I nearly crashed at Turn 1!” Martin revealed. “Pecco got past me, but I fought back immediately. Marc had nothing to lose, so I had to be more cautious.”
It’s all about playing it smart at this stage of the season! Martin’s balancing act between pushing hard and managing risks could be what wins him the title. π #ChampionshipBattle
"I Didn't Like His Behaviour" - Bezzecchi and ViΓ±ales’ Feisty Exchange π
Saturday’s Tissot Sprint gave us more drama than expected, with Marco Bezzecchi and Maverick ViΓ±ales coming together in a high-speed collision. The crash earned Bezzecchi a long lap penalty, but the real fireworks came after the race.
Bezzecchi wasn’t impressed with ViΓ±ales’ reaction: “What I didn’t like was Maverick’s behaviour. We both ended up fine, but instead of checking on me, he gave me the middle finger and swore at me multiple times. That’s not what I’d do after a crash at 300 km/h!” π³
Talk about heated! Hopefully, these two can cool down before the next round. #RiderRivalry
Jack Miller’s Rollercoaster Home GP π’
Aussie Jack Miller gave it everything at his home GP, but it wasn’t the fairytale finish he’d hoped for. Despite a flying start, an early clash with Alex Marquez put him dead last by Turn 2. But Miller didn’t give up, clawing his way back through the field to finish P11. πͺ
“I got a mega start, but then Alex turned in on me, and I was last by Turn 2,” said Miller. “I battled back but the front tyre faded with a few laps to go. I gave it everything I had, but it just wasn’t enough.”
Tough luck for the local hero, but the crowd still loved him! π¦πΊ #JackAttack
"It Was a Nightmare" - More Woes for Joan Mir π©
It’s been a difficult season for Joan Mir, and Phillip Island only added to his frustrations. After showing solid form in practice, Mir’s race ended in disappointment with a DNF due to a mysterious vibration problem.
Mir vented his frustration: “I don’t understand where this issue came from. I didn’t have it all weekend, but in the race, the vibration was unbearable. We need to figure it out.”
Mir’s perseverance is inspiring, but he’s got some serious gremlins to deal with! π ️ #NeverGiveUp
Fabio Di Giannantonio’s Comeback Heroics π₯
Despite ongoing collarbone problems from his Austria crash, Fabio Di Giannantonio put on a brilliant display at Phillip Island. Finishing P4 in the main race and P7 in the Sprint, he narrowly missed his first podium of the year.
“It’s a bittersweet feeling,” Di Giannantonio admitted. “It was probably one of my best performances this season, but I’m disappointed not to have the trophy. Still, after everything, I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”
With performances like this, Di Giannantonio’s first podium could be just around the corner! π #FabioFightsBack
